I’ve had lots of queries about Female Viagra over the last few weeks and will try to cover the main topics in this blog.
Many women can experience different forms of sexual dysfunction and it is understandable that people may look to a product like Viagra as a potential solution. The old adage of “Sex Sells” is true here and there are lots of people and companies trying to sell “Female Viagra” with the lure of an amazing sexual experience.
Unfortunately, no.
The brand Viagra is manufactured by Pfizer and is only licensed for Erectile Dysfunction in Men. Many Health Food shops and online retailers may market products as “Female Viagra” but in truth they are selling food or herbal supplements instead of an extensively studied and licensed medicine. That is not to say they will not work at all, but evidence is quite mixed.
There is a recreational trend for a couple to split a Viagra or Sildenafil tablet between them to enhance the sexual experience for both. Whilst many people feel this boosts their sex lives, it is important to note that this is not recommended. The effects of Viagra (or other erectile dysfunction medicines such as Sildenafil or Tadalafil) have never been properly studied on women and it is unclear how safe it is to consume in the short and long term.
There was a study carried out by University of California Los Angeles in 2003 that showed women who took Viagra had an increase in their sexual enjoyment. This study is seen as important and did led to other research. However, the subsequent studies did not find the same outcomes. The original work indicated that Viagra increased the blood flow to the genitals and therefore increased pleasure. An alternate school of thought believes the increase in sexual enjoyment was caused by a placebo effect, not the drug. The research is available to read online and can be googled quite easily.
The “Little Pink Pill” in America (often referred to as Female Viagra) is a fully licensed medicine for Women with HypoActive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD), or put more simply, low libido. Branded as Addyi, it contains the drug Flibanserin and is designed to increase sexual desire instead of enhance sexual enjoyment. It is not currently available in The UK.
As always when buying medicines online, always look for the MHRA and GPhC logos which show the site is fully regulated and selling genuine products.
