Erectile Dysfunction Treatment Comparison

Dr Andrews

Erectile dysfunction is thought to effect roughly 40% of men in the 40s and 50% of men in their 50s, though rates can be difficult to track. For one thing, patients can be uncomfortable discussing their inability to perform and it is also now far easier to access treatment without a face-to-face transaction. What we do know is that rates are definitely going up. In some cases, this can be treated with a diet or lifestyle change. Some medications such as antidepressants, chemotherapy and drugs to treat high blood pressure are also known to attribute to erectile issues.

We are lucky to have 4 different drugs available for treating erectile dysfunction. From quick onset to long lasting and now dailies, you have a plethora of options available.

WHAT ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION MEDICATIONS ARE AVAILABLE?

All medications are PDE5 inhibitors and work in the same way by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis, allowing more blood to flow through causing an erection when you are aroused sexually. The four drugs we have available are listed below along with their commonly known brand names.

  • Sildenafil (Viagra)
  • Tadalafil (Cialis)
  • Avanafil (known as Spedra in the EU and Stendra elsewhere)
  • Vardenafil (Levitra)

Sildenafil and Tadalafil are now both available in their generic (and cheaper!) versions as well as branded.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES IN ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION DRUGS?

Sildenafil (Viagra) takes around 30 to 40 minutes to become effective and will last you for about 4 hours.

Tadalafil (Cialis) lasts much longer. After 30 minutes you should feel the effects and can last up to 36 hours in some cases. Hence the reason it has been nicknamed “the weekend pill”. Tadalafil is also available in dailies tablets, allowing for a more spontaneous sex life.

Avanafil (Spedra) is the fastest acting of the erectile dysfunction treatments. It can begin working within the first 15 minutes.

Vardenafil (Levitra) takes approximately 25 minutes before it starts to work. Levitra stays in your system & the effects last longer than Viagra, up to 12 hours.

All erectile dysfunction treatments require sexual stimulation – the medicine on its own will not cause an erection. Spedra works in the quickest time and is popular for this reason whilst Tadalafil and Cialis last for the longest time and are referred to as “The Weekend Pill”. The latter are also available as dailies allowing for a more spontaneous sex life.
